Private Custom Italy Tours in Umbria

Lying just to the east of Tuscany, Umbria shares its natural beauty, medieval and Renaissance history and art, and wonderful food and wine. What it doesn’t share are the tourist crowds - we love to explore off-the-beaten-path gems like Spoleto, Spello, Todi, Montefalco, Norcia, Castglione del Lago, and Bevagna. Even more famous destinations like Assisi, home to and the grand Basilica di San Francisco, with its spectacular frescoes and Orvieto with its colorful Duomo are relatively quiet. Countryside explorations will visit the lush olive orchards and fertile vineyards that produce world-famous oils and wines, from crisp white Orvieto to the intense Sagrantino. And of course we’ll have to sample the local truffles! Kathy and Vernon recommend this region for those who wish to be off the tourist track, or for those who have a bit more time and may want to combine with a few days in Tuscany.

Best activities: Walking, cycling. Umbria is hilly, we recommend e-bikes for more casual cyclists.

Best time of year: April through June, September and early October. July and August are hot, in the past few years the weather has been quite hot during these months, with long stretches of 100°F temps.

Visiting off-season: Walking tours combined with city visits are possible year round.
